Relax

It’s easy to jump into anger and hostility when someone is being plain obnoxious (to put it nicely). Well, here are some ways on how to keep the chill while the situation is heating up:

Count to five while taking deep breaths. The breathing will increase the oxygen flow thus counteracting the release of adrenaline when a person is under stress. The five seconds will give you enough time to think calm thoughts so that rationality can kick in.

Try to keep your voice  and tone in a normal level. Yelling will make the other person more hostile. The argument will go on forever and might even escalate to something more dangerous.

Be the bigger person and listen. Yep. Despite the insults and name calling, seek to listen and try to understand the other person’s opinions. We all know that sometimes, people who are upset don’t mean what they say. This way, you’ll be able to choose the right words to use in order to at least
appease the other party.

If you want to preserve your calm (and face), then be sensitive about the mood. If the other party is under the influence of drug or alcohol, then it might be better to back out and walk away.
