The key to having good dental care for elderly patients is to find a dentist who is willing to see elderly patients. It may be surprising to find out that there are dentists who refuse to see elderly patients because they are often uncovered by insurance.
Teeth of the elderly may have old fillings that need to be looked at and be replaced if necessary.

Their teeth are also more prone to decay and their gums may also recede in time. Although regular oral care (toothbrushing, flossing, etc.) is a good preventive measure, a dentist is needed to correct and preserve teeth.

The elderly should also avoid tobacco and other food or drinks that may cause staining. Couple with poor diet, these are the number one causes of tooth decay. In worse cases, they can also result to a high risk of oral cancers.

Tell the dentist of any medication that is being taken by the patient. Some of these medicines may weaken the teeth.

If a healthcare worker takes care of the elderly patient, then make sure that they do not neglect dental care as well.
