Worker

As a new manager, this may be new to you. Back when you were just a staff, you were just nodding your head at everything your old boss said. But now that you’re the boss, you have to know how to be a better boss.

During appraisals, there is a need to reiterate some company policies and ideals which are needed to empower your worker.

Give him an overview of where the business is going. If you want your employee to work towards the same goals, you have to remind him the directions the company is planning to go.

Offer your guidance and counsel. Your staff might need assistance and further training and you can take the initiative to offer them your help. Ask them where they’re having difficulties and help them overcome their weakness.

Tell them what your ideals are. Your worker has to know your standards so that he will always try to excel. He may not reach your ideals, but his performance will definitely improve.

Ask him about his ideals. After you shared your expectations as a manager, you should also know his expectations. This way, you’ll know where you can make compromises on certain problem areas. He might ask you about salary increase and other sensitive areas but it’s best to be open about such issues.

Ask about their aspirations regarding promotions. It’s good to know where your staff wants to go as far as his career in your company is concerned. This way, you can help him gauge his efforts and help him reach his target.

Be a good mentor. Your staff’s performance also depends largely on your leadership skills. Be someone he can look up to and excel above the other managers so that he can be proud that he works under you and will listen to your advice on work and professionalism.
