Check out with their doctor first. You can find out which exercises your elderly parents are recommended to do, and which ones they should avoid. Although exercise is important, it is equally useful to know if your parents are physically able to do them. Exercises that are too strenuous, might lead to more problems. Easy fitness routines (such as walking) are good way to start.
Make the fitness program fun. We all know that exercise is (almost) never fun, especially if the routines are boring and repetitious, never mind if they hurt to boot. Keep the treadmill away, because in this case, you won’t be able to expect your parents to get on them – ever. Instead, why not take your mother (who’s a flower enthusiast) walking in public gardens? Or perhaps your dad might like fishing. A little trip out of town for a bit of walking and fishing could be arranged.
Remember when you were a kid and you disliked being treated like one? This is the same for your parents. Treat them with respect. Don’t bully them into exercising. Instead, ask them to do it for you since you want them to live longer and healthier. Instead of telling them what to do, why not do it with them? Make it as your quality time bonding with them. This way, your parents will be more encouraged to live more actively.
