Be sure you’re off to a good start on your first few weeks at work. Here are some tips on how to make that good first impression:
Observe and Learn. Instead of talking and showing off, spend your first weeks at work taking in your tasks and the workplace culture. Try not to show off to avoid being tagged as a know-it-all. Share your knowledge only when appropriate. Be brief and relevant.
Learn the chain of command. Make sure you know to whom you should directly report. This is to avoid side-stepping the proper channels.
Ask Questions. You’re the new kid, of course you’d be ignorant of the ways of the workplace. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or to ask for help or clarifications. Of course you should also avoid bugging your coworker at every turn. Keep the tip above in mind - observe and learn.
Be honest and assertive. If you make mistakes, own up to them and do your best to rectify them as soon as possible. Just try to learn from these boo-boo’s so as not to repeat them in the future.
Be punctual. It won’t do you any good if you show up for work late.
Be optimistic. Keep negative opinions to yourself and avoid becoming involved with trash-talking about anything may it be relevant to the workplace or not.
