Although it is ideal that students already have an idea on which career to embark on upon making a decision on which college course to take, things can happen along the way to change it. Experiences, meeting new people, and generally being exposed to the real world can fuel that change. So for those students who are graduating soon, here are some tips on how to finally decide on a career that you think would be right for you.
Keep an open mind and be flexible. Think about the things that you enjoy doing, or try to imagine yourself in different professions. Where do you think you’ll have a satisfying career?
Take advantage of your school’s career advising services. It’s usually for free and a career adviser would surely help you ask the right questions to help you decide on which career to take. They have different information on organizations and other career resources. You can also ask if you can take aptitude and personality exams so you’ll know where you really are good at.
Talk to people in different professions. Ask them how it is like working in their chosen career. Talk to teachers and your parents. You will surely gain different perspectives not only about work, but also about “the real world.”
Be an intern or work part time at industries where you think you want to enter after graduating. This would help you gain an insider’s look. It would be easier to decide then if you want to pursue a career there or not.
Or you can always take some time out, if you can afford it. Travel the world and gain more insights. The answer might be out there somewhere. Experience helps a lot in making the best decision for you later on.
