Constructive and not to mention, tactful, criticism is never an easy thing to do. But if you feel that there’s a need to make one, especially if it is a necessary and helpful feedback at work, then you’d better learn how to do it.
Constructive criticism should be timely. The earlier it is delivered, the more effective it will be in influencing behavior. It will be easier for you and the person you are critiquing to remember what needs to be changed or modified.
Be specific. This will make the criticism more straight to the point. It will avoid unnecessary comments that might offend or hurt the person. Just dwell on the things that are needed to be changed.
Be positive. Don’t talk to the person scathingly, or as if you are specifically targeting them personally. Smile but don’t be patronizing. It will be better if you can offer suggestions as well.
Be tactful. Do not give criticisms in front of other people, otherwise you’ll be hurting the person’s pride.
