Career Move

Stuck in a rut? Perhaps it’s finally time for a career make-over. But don’t go handing over that resignation letter just yet. Make sure that you go over the following considerations first:

What is your financial situation? (Semi)Fresh graduates will find it easier to change careers but if you decide to do it in a later age, it might get a little risky. So work out your financial situation and make sure that what you have is enough to support your lifestyle for at least six months.

How will it affect your loved ones? If you are single and nobody depends on you financially, then it would be easier. But if you are married or have a family, then you would have to make sure that your new career choice does not compromise your relationship with them. Talk with your partner or your family and find out how they feel about you following a different career path.

Do you have a plan? By setting out a plan, you will be able to set up goals that you want to achieve in your new career. This way you can set out to develop new skills or study new information that you will need. This will ensure that your career does not grow stagnant. Start with jotting down what you find interesting. Find out jobs that are associated with these things. List down the skills you have that will help you prosper in your new career and list down the ones that you might need to acquire.

Do you know enough about it? You’ve finally found a career that interests you. What do you do next? Research. Read, or better yet talk to people who are in that profession so you get enough perspective. Ponder over the pros and cons. Know what jobs and salary range offered. Can these afford your current lifestyle? Or, will you need to change your lifestyle, just in case? Are you ready to make changes? Try to find answers to these questions.

Are you willing to risk it? Do you really have the guts to do the leap? This is the most difficult consideration of all. Not everyone has the confidence or the optimism to actually go through a make-over. Just remember, if it will make you a happier person, and a more fulfilled one, then go for it.
