Being a lovable boss does not mean you should give out bonuses every week or pass over violations of company policies. But it does require very difficult values such as fairness, sense of discipline, and an abundant supply of patience. If you’re new to this position of power and accountability, here are tips which can help you do your work as you should and still be popular among your staff.
Don’t bring your personal issue to the office anymore. Being a boss increases the demand for you to be highly professional. This is the best way you can relate to everyone unlike when you were a staff where you can always choose the people you wanna get along with.
Be careful how you make praises and reprimands. Too loud praises might come off as having a favorite, and too loud reprimands might come off as being rude and inconsiderate. In the same way, give appropriate incentives and penalties.
Stay out of the personal issues of your staff. Just like you not wanting them to be involved with your personal life, you too shouldn’t invade their personal space. Maintaining your distance enables you to be objective during their performance evaluation.
Be a good leader. Show them that you trust them with the work you assign and help them out if they’re having difficulties meeting the objectives. Work as hard so they can feel that you’re working as a team. And don’t be a know-it-all. Even though you are right most of the time, don’t rub it in because intimidating your staff will only make the communication gap wider.
Promote your team outside the department. You need to boost the morale of your workers so that they’ll be proud that they belong to your team. Tell them they’re good when they are, and celebrate accomplishments to stimulate team spirit.
