Lawns are ideal for family homes, especially those with growing kids and pets. Lawns provide the much needed space to run around and play. However, times are now changing. Lawns aren’t that much needed anymore. Resources needed to maintain them are better off spent in other priorities.

But this doesn’t mean that homes can’t have a beautiful and serene landscape around them. Lawn-less landscapes provide a view, or even space for someone to spend a few minutes to relax from a hectic workday.

If you choose to have a lawn-less landscape, the first thing you need to do is to have the soil tested. This is to determine the texture, the acidity, and the salt content of the soil. This will also be the basis for which types of plants should best thrive in your garden.

Once the soil is tested, you can now choose the shrubs, ornamental grasses, and perennials you wish to put in your landscape. You can sketch a plan and note which areas where you want color or shade.

You can opt to put seasonal plants and plan their arrangement in your landscape. This way, you can enjoy your garden all year round.

Just a little warning though, the initial laying out of a lawn-less landscape can be financially intimidating for some. But remember, lawn-less landscapes do not need regular maintenance such as watering, fertilizing, and mowing.

Whatever you decide, make sure that it is something that will suit your style and your lifestyle.
