One way to get a better understanding of a particular course is by also getting a better understanding of the professor. Although it’s not a pre-requisite to get to know your professor better, having a good professional relationship with them will help you be at ease enough with them to ask for consultations on particular topics that you find difficulty in understanding.

Take advantage of your professor’s consultation hours. These might be indicated in your course syllabus. If you can’t understand a specific topic, or if you have questions on a previous lecture, you can make an appointment to see your professor.

Participate in class. Let yourself be heard. Ask questions if given the opportunity. Do problem sets on the board. Having your questions answered on the spot, or being given corrections while you’re doing boardwork will help you make improvements on your work soon. It also helps that your professor will take notice of your efforts.

Do extra credits. If you are able to manage it, this will help you gain better understanding of the subject being discussed. Consult with your professor and show them where you are on your extra credit work so you can discuss it together. Not only will it prove your ability to be proactive, but it will give you an advantage of going beyond the curriculum.
