For all you single dads out there, there are more things to know than the basic–meals, grocery, and communication. Other stuff like child safety, stranger dangers, and other house rules should also be in order.
- Do you need a babysitter? Do you work full time or do you spend a minimum amount of time at work? Depending on what your job is, you should make sure that when you’re not around, your young kids are never left by themselves. Make sure you are confident about the babysitter’s qualifications and character before you entrust your child.
- Make you room safe. For this, you can read our full article on baby-proofing your space for child safety.
- Keep doors closed. If you have a big house, you don’t want to lose your kid and spend time searching each room. Keep the doors closed, especially the front door, bathroom, your room, basement, and the attic.
- Keep all flammable stuff out of their reach. You can either put these in the basement or in a locked shelf. As long as it’s locked away, you can’t worry about them playing with fire. You can also buy an extinguisher and teach them how to use it in case of emergencies.
- Do the same thing with medicines. Keep them somewhere they can’t find them. If you got older kid, you can probably tell him that there’s a first-aid kit in the top shelf.
- Buy only safe toys. There are toys which cause lead poisoning and there are toys with very small parts which your children might swallow.
- Always put on their seatbelts when they’re riding along.
- Know how to perform CPR.
- Teach them about the rules against strangers.
- Print out a list of important numbers and paste it somewhere they can easily see. Include 911, your office number, your mobile number, and the digits of some trusted relatives and friends who live nearby.
