Child Speak

Are your children strong-willed and refuse to take ‘no’ for an answer? Then a different parenting strategy is called for. If handled carefully, your children can use their strong personality positively as they grow up.

One thing you have to remember is to be firm in your stand. If your children sense that you easily give in, chances are, they will take advantage of it. The idea here is to be careful when you issue a statement. If you say that there will be no TV if they won’t nap, then you have to have a strong resolve to follow this through. Your credibility too is at stake.

Sometimes, it is also best to let your children face the consequences of their actions. Sometimes, experience is the only way these strong-willed children can learn. Choose the “issues” you need to be very firm on.

Set a routine. Surprises often unsettle strong-willed children. If you suddenly spring to them that it’s time to study when they are in the middle of play, then chances are they will refuse to obey your command. If they know what’s coming, then they will simply go along with the schedule.

Be a good role model. Show control and show flexibility to your children as well. Make sure that you practice what you preach.
