Smoking is a hard habit to break, but if you have decided to embark on this life-changing endeavor, here are some tips to help you along the way:
Don’t quit the habit on a whim. If you truly want to stop smoking, then it is because it is something that you want to do badly. Prepare yourself. Make a list of all the reasons you can think of why you should quit. Read and re-read this list throughout the process of quitting. This will help strengthen your resolve.
Don’t go cold turkey. It means, just stopping altogether. Set a date when you’ll start with your quitting program. Focus your mind on this date so that it get used to the idea so when that specific day comes, you’re prepared in body and in mind.
Go to a doctor beforehand and tell them of your plan. They can give you extra advise on what to do if you have symptoms of withdrawals. They may even recommend good nicotine patches, if you decide to use them. Throw away cigarettes, lighters, and all the stuff that reminds you of smoking.
Get support from friends and family. Tell them of your plans so that they can help you get through temptation. You can also call them when the craving is starting to get too strong for you to handle. They’ll also be able to understand if you become irritable, and help you handle it as well.
Learn to handle cravings as best as you can. Channel your energy to work or a hobby. It won’t be easy but persevere. You may encounter lapses and it may take time but just remind yourself of your reasons why you are subjecting yourself to such torture – and that is because you want to have a better, healthier, and longer life.
