It’s harder to maintain a relationship than to get into one. That’s why when you found a keeper, you want to do most anything to keep it. And we all know that one of the most important things we can do to make a relationship last is by establishing good communication. But since it’s easier said than done, here’s some tips to guide you.
Talk about issues big or small. Sometimes a big argument could have been prevented if you talked about it when it was just a small issue. Don’t wait for problems to get bigger because it gets harder to mend.
Collect your thoughts before arguing in a fight. It’s easy to let all hell loose during an emotional fight. But it pays to choose your words, and to argue with sound reasoning.
Be open to compromise. You can’t always get what you want so sometimes you have to put yourself aside and give way and give in. The relationship is give and take.
Control your voice volume so as not to agitate the tension.
Be fair. Accept your mistake when you’re the one at fault. Denial will only make you defensive.
Don’t allow yourself to feel contempt towards your partner because you might lose your respect and love altogether.

1We often forget how it feels to be without relationship when we are in the midst of one–for better or worse. Out of relationship there is both a certain freedom and promise, but also certain alienation and ambiguity or even anxiety. If we could remember the pain of being without relationship, we might be more willing to cherish, nurture and work on the precious relationships we have. Don’t ‘cha think?
