We all know that metals are prone to rust and at one point or another we’ll see those orange specks on several of our tools, furnishings, and even our kids’ toys. Here are some ways to prevent rust from forming on our home items:
Inspect the metal items in your house. Prioritize those which have more exposure to moisture. For example, hinges (gate, entryway, garage), doorknobs, outdoor furniture, grills, and tools are good candidates for rustproofing because they are exposed to moisture and oxygen.
The best and easiest way to rustproof metal is to make sure that you regularly clean them. Dry tools with a soft cloth after using. Remember to lubricate hinges and other outdoor metal items as well.
There are different lubricants available out in the market. There are those which can be rubbed or sprayed on items. There are also wax varieties. The most common is WD-40, but there are other products which you can use as well. You can also try spraying a thin coat of zinc on metal surfaces. Zinc is good at preventing rust from forming.
Another alternative rustproof coating can be made at home by mixing one part of ahydrous lanolin and five parts of paint thinner. You can dip metal items in this mixture or directly apply it on metal surfaces with a brush. Just make sure that you use thick rubber gloves and wear a mask before you mix and use it. Some people can be allergic to lanolin.
