Accessing internet in public is very convenient for people who want to stay wireless even while on the go. Here are some precautions when you’re out and connecting to the wireless:
Always choose encrypted networks when you are able to. Yes, establishments might ask you pay a certain fee so you can use them but that is better than having your personal information and passwords stolen. This might not provide you one hundred percent security but it’s a start.
If you have no choice but to use public access, then try to disable File and Printer Sharing when using Windows. People can easily access through this so better safe than sorry.
Have firewall installed in your computer. If you don’t like to pay for such a program, there are good free downloadable ones on the internet.
The best prevention is of course, not to send any personal information over Wireless connection and log in to sites that are encrypted ( try to use https:// instead of http://).
