What with the help of technology, it gets easier to stay and work at home instead. Some practically leave their company to start their own private practice at home, while some opt for telecommuting instead of actually going to work. However, if one wants to effectively work at home, then one must have a formal, even if it’s just a makeshift, home office.
Desk. A home office cannot be complete without a desk. This desk can be anything depending on one’s budget. It can be an expensive handsome solid mahogany, or you can buy one from the thrift store which you can restore yourself simply by sanding and applying fresh varnish or paint. Whatever this desk is, make sure that it is sturdy enough to hold your computer or laptop, and large enough for you to work on comfortably.
Chair. The chair is important as well. We suggest that you splurge on your office chair, especially if you are going to be sitting behind your desk for most of the day. Make sure that you get a comfortable one, and one that would support your back.
Lights. Energy efficient ones are advisable. You can have one overhead and you can also have a desk lamp if you prefer. But make sure that whatever light you choose shouldn’t hurt your eyes and that it sufficiently illuminates your office.
Storage. You can be very creative with storage space. Just be sure that you have everything organized and that you don’t trip on boxes and cabinets in your office. You can add a cork board in your office where you can pin notes and a large calendar.
Art. Don’t forget to make your home office at home. Hang paintings on walls, add photos of your family, friends, and pets. Add a few knick-knacks on shelves.
Function. Make sure your office is functional. Get wired. Have a phone, a fax machine, and a wireless modem as well.
