herbs

Planting herbs on the windowsill not only beautifies the home, it’s also convenient, having fresh herbs for cooking sumptuous meals.  Here are some tips on how to choose herbs to plant in your windowsill garden.

The most obvious factor to consider is choosing herbs that you will be able to use for cooking. The most common herbs used in recipes are basil, mint, thyme, parsley, oregano, and chives. You should also factor in the space where the herbs will grow. Will they have plenty of room or is the space too crowded? Next, make sure that you put your garden where the herbs will get enough sunlight. Again, not too much to dry out the plants.

Bay leaves are used in stews, soucesm, and soups. They are, however, best planted in their own pots as they dislike crowded spaces.

Pepper plants are perfect for a windowsill herb garden as the dark green leaves contrast wonderfully against the red peppers.

Oregano is a common herb usedin salads and sauces. They like dry conditions so don’t overwater them.

Keep mints and chives at bay as they grow very fast. Mints also hang down over the sides of the their pots so you should keep your eye on them.

There are many kinds of parsley but the most common are the curly leaf- which is used mostly for garnishing, and the flat leaf- which has a lot of flavor.

Thyme is an attractive addition to your garden. They thrive well in pots. They also like dry soil so don’t water them much. You can plant rosemary (which likes a lot of sun) and thyme together.
