Here are some helpful advice for freelance writers and those who wish to venture out on their own:
Always keep copies of your portfolio - hard and digital. Clients always ask for writing samples. This way, you’ll be ready to show them what you’ve got and you don’t need to rush writing one, unless they ask you to write something very specific.
Write even if you have no current project. About 500 to 1000 words each of feature articles will give you a good stock of work. You can try to have this published in blogs or local magazines and newspapers. Writing everyday will also hone your skills. It will also keep you from being a “mood writer,” or writing only when the mood strikes.
If you are web savvy, you can write your own blog or better yet, create your own website where you can advertise your services.
Visit freelance or writing forums online where you can meet other writers and potential clients. Just remember that if you promise to commit to something, be sure that you deliver it so that you won’t ruin your reputation as a writer.

1Writers definitely could use their own website and a portfolio site. You could combine your portfolio with your website. That’s what I did. I have a blog to showcase my work, but created a Portfolio Page so clients can see my other work.
