Eating soup can be a bit tricky. Not if you follow these easy tips on how to prevent from spilling and slurping!
Okay. Slurping can be… okay. This depends if you’re in a country (such as Japan) which considers slurping as a form of compliment to the chef. However, in western cultures, slurping is definitely a no-no.
Place your serviette or napkin on your lap to catch any spillage.
Most soups often have bread or bread roll served with them. If you have this, you can break up the bread and eat it with the soup. In formal setting, never put the bread pieces on the soup or use the bread to mop it up.
Pull the dish close to you. This will prevent spillage.
Choose the correct spoon. A soup spoon is larger than a regular spoon. In formal dining, this is usually the spoon (among other spoons) placed farthest to the plate.
Do not overfill the spoon so it won’t spill when you lift it. Lift the spoon carefully from the dish to your mouth, sipping the liquid quietly.
If you wish to finish the soup, tilt the bowl away from you. Do not lift the bowl.
Place the spoon in your bowl and pushed it away from you gently once you’re done.
