When moving furniture, make sure that you ask help from someone to help you lift the furniture up and carefully place it elsewhere. Do not drag furniture as this can terribly scratch the floor. If you live alone, purchase leg coasters that roll.

Sweep along the grain of the floor instead of against it. Going against the grain can cause small scratches because of the friction and abrasion from particles being swept.

If you are going to use a broom, use one with soft bristles. You can also use a soft dry mop. If you are using a vacuum cleaner, make sure that you use the hardwod floor attachment.
