Fitness – a word that evokes either joy or loathing. Exercise and a healthful, balanced diet are necessary for the human body to perform efficiently. No matter your present fitness level, it is vital to workout on a regular basis and put the right foods in your body in order to stay as healthy as possible. But in a society that mandates that your monthly calendar fill up more quickly than your water bottle, what is a person to do? The foods that are fastest to prepare and most readily available are usually the most unhealthy, and, oftentimes, exercise is only an option occasionally. The solution? Be realistic and practical, and choose a plan that works for you.

When it comes to exercise, every fitness plan doesn’t work for everybody. Take the time to explore the endless options. You can choose a fast-paced, high intensity, thirty minute plan to burn fat and sculpt muscle quickly, or indulge in long runs to get your blood pumping. If you have access to a good local trail, invest in a bicycle. Bikes are great because you can use them for training or racing, but you can also use them throughout the day for transportation to work or the store. Walking is also a great way to burn calories. You can even do exercises in your home, such as jumping rope, circuits that include push ups and body squats, or DVD workouts that are widely available in stores, on television, or online. If you need a push, join a gym and hire a personal trainer, or workout with an encouraging friend. Whatever workout plan you choose, make sure you do it at least three times weekly to reap its advantages. And choose something you like. Otherwise, you won’t do it for longer than a week.

Just as important as the way you move your body is the fuel that you put inside of it. Diet is actually quite simple. You should eat every three to four hours, alternating between meals and snacks, starting with a full meal for breakfast. For meals, half of your plate should be comprised of colorful vegetables. The closer to raw, the better. One quarter should be whole grains, such as pasta or rice. Meat servings should be lean and no bigger than the palm of your hand. For snacks, choose fruit, vegetables, or yogurt. Only drink water or healthy teas, and use Monavie as a supplement to fill all the holes. Monavie is a high-density juice made from the purees of such superfruits as blueberries and acai berries.

The hardest part of pursuing fitness is making a plan. Find something that lines up with your schedule, interests, and taste buds, and you’ll be on the road to staying fit for life.

One of the best ways to lose weight is for you to count calories. Making sure that you control the portions you eat and that you don’t exceed the daily caloric limits would help ensure that you won’t be taking in added energy (that gets stored in the form of fat). Here are some basic tips to help you count those cals.

Set a target calorie input. If you plan to lose weight, you need to trim down the number of calories typically required. Here’s a target weight calculator that would help you identify the target weight and target calories. Keep in mind that you also need to take in a percentage of carbohydrates, proteins and fats during the day.

Get a food diary. No need to get a fancy diary. A small pocket planner would do. Just log all the things that you eat at the course of the day and their corresponding calorie count. Here’s a calorie chart to help you get started. In no time, you’d be able to remember the food items that you regularly eat.

Check food labels. Sometimes, processed foods would not be listed in the calorie chart. So this is where you should start checking food labels. Manufacturers are now required to place pertinent nutrition information on food labels and the calories. Be sure to check for which amount the stated calories are. Sometimes, one pack may contain two or more servings. That pack of chips might say 170 calories per serving but the pack contains six servings. Finishing the whole pack would mean you’ve just taken 1020 calories.

Summer has just started and the beaches are crowded with people in their trendy summer bikinis and beach shorts. At this most enjoyable season, everyone forgets that the bright summer sun can cause the most damaging diseases — including skin cancer. The only way to truly enjoy is to maximize the use of sunscreen. Here are some tips on buying and applying sunscreen.

Choose a product that will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. Check the labels and determine if the product contains the ingredients that will block both rays. Both UVA and UVB rays play a crucial role in promoting skin cancer. They can also cause common disorders as well. UVA rays promotes premature skin aging while UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn.

Like cosmetics and other skin care products, have a small sample test to see if you are allergic to the product. Apply a small dot under your chin or at the back of your hand and wait for a few hours. If a rash develops, drop the product comepletely and scout for another brand.

UV rays can penetrate even on cloudy days. Be sure to apply sunblock even if it looks like it’s going to rain. As much as possible, walk under a shade or wear enough clothing and accessories which can block the sun’s rays effectively.

Apply sunscreen on your skin 15 – 20 minutes before sun exposure. Give your skin some time to absorb the product before rushing outisde. Reapply sunscreen every two hours if you plan to stay outside for a long period of time.

Bites and sting can be pretty harmless at first. It can even be solved by simple meds and antiseptic wash. However, some people develop a sever allergic reaction to certain bites or stings. This allergic reaction — or anaphylactic shock can either hit immediately after the bite/sting or a few minutes after. Don’t be caught unprepared. Here are some tips to guide you should anyone near you undergoes anaphylactic shock.

This life-threatening condition can blindside you quickly and you may not have time to react immediately. However if you are familiar with its symptoms, you will be able to recognize it quickly and act accordingly or at least call for medical attention immediately. Signs and symptoms of anaphylactic shock include the following:

Weakness and tiredness

Tightness in the chest

Wheezing or sneezing

Hives or rash

Severe itching

Shortness of breath

Loss of consciousness

Should an anaphylactic shock occur, let the victim lay down on his back and prop up his feet onto a pillow, cushion or blanket. Let his head stay low and if ever he needs to vomit, just carefully turn his head to one side.

Keep the airway open and eliminate any obstruction. Loosen his clothing especially around the neck and the waist. Make sure that he has no difficulty breathing. Perform artificial respiration (or let someone with experience do it) if necessary.

If you can, remove any stinger embedded on the skin of the victim.

Apply cold compress on the affected area. Be careful though, do not use ice for the cold compress as this can cause frostbite rather than alleviate the bite or sting. Opt for cold towels instead.

Arthritis can be crippling since even the slightest movement can cause pain. However, this should not prevent you from being physcally active, fit and healthy. Exercise can still be done even by people inflicted with arthritis. Here are some tips on exercising with arthritis.

First and foremost, consult your doctor or physical therapist before starting a exercise program. They can assess whether a certain exercise program can benefit your situation or do more harm than good. They can also recommend exercise routines for stretching and strenthening specific muscles of the body. A personalized and specialized exercise program can not only increase your mobility and range of motion but it can also help you prevent arthritis to occur on you unaffected joints.

Lossen up your muscles before every exercise session. Some prefer a warm bath or shower while others apply ice to the affected joints before exercising. Choose the option that best suits your needs.

Opt for low-impact exercises over rigorous exercise routines that strains your joints and muscles. Some low impact activities to consider include low-impact aerobics, walking, swimming and biking.

Schedule exercise half an hour after taking your medicine. This is the optimal time to do physical activity since the medicine is on full effect. Remember not to increase your intake of pain medication to counteract the pain you’re going to feel. When pain strikes, it is best to stop because this is the sign that your exercise is worsening the situation.

When you are on vacation, even the simplest need like purified water may not be readily available. You’re lucky if you are within the city where bottled and tap water are easily accessible. However, this might not be the case if you choose to spend your vacation in a remote island or high up in the mountains. For this situation, you have to improvise. Here are some tips on preparing your own purified water.

(NOTE: Some of these methods are to be done only when absolutely necessary. Try at your own risk.)

Boiling water still remains to be the most effective way to purify water. High levels of heat destroys germs, bacteria and other disease-causing organisms without changing the water’s taste. To prepare your purified water, bring the water (from tap or other water source) to boiling temperature and let it stay for at least 5 minutes.

Use water-purification tablets to purify the water should boiling become an improbable option. Water-purification tablets are available in camping-goods stores so be sure to have a pack before leaving for vacation. Follow the directions carefully to assure yourself and your travel companions safe and purified water for everyone’s use.

Filtration can also be done to purify water. Sporting-goods store sells filtration kits which can be used to prepare your purified water. Be careful though as some of them might not be effective in purifying water. Consult with the local health department or the travel clinic before purchasing a filtration kit.

Add Iodine or Chlorine to water to purify it. Five drops of Iodine or two drops of chlorine to a quart of water can effectively disinfect it. Leave it for about 30 minutes before sampling. If you cannot taste the iodine or chlorine, at one or two drops more and let it be for another 30 minutes. A word of caution though: people with thyroid ailments should not take this treated-water without consulting a physician.

Having a more active and healthier lifestyle is one of the best decisions a person can make to improve his life. Enrolling in a gym or a health club can provide you the resources you need to further your goal. However, not all gyms and health clubs are equal. Here are some things to consider when choosing a gym or health club for you.

Choose a gym or a health club that is within 15 mins from your home or work. This is te maximum allowable travel time before to perform your exercise routine. Time should not be wasted on traveling to the gym from your house or from the office. Instead, it should be maximized so that all your goals for the day can be attained. Also, you would want to lessen the chances of bailing out on your exercise routine because it is not easily inaccessible.

Ask if most of your free time fall within the operating hours of the gym or health club. It will be such a waste if can only avail of their services 1-2 hours per week just because they’re not available when you’re free to do your exercise routine. Better choose gyms or health clubs that are open till early evening and on weekends and holidays so that you can get most out of their services.

Opt for gyms and health clubs that offer the most affordable and cost-effective. Cheaper does not always translate to a better gym. Be certain that the equipment and other materials within the gym and health club are well worth the money you’ll be shelling out. Also, choose a gym or health club that can offer you a longer membership period for a relatively smaller fee than the others.

Motion sickness can be a real downer especially during long road trips. Good news is, you can prepare your body to become familiar with motion so that you can enjoy your trip more. Some simple exercises and movements known to prevent dizziness can also prevent possible motion sickness. Before your next trip, try these simple exercises to get your body accustomed to movement.

Play with a tennis ball or any other round object. Toss it from one hand to the other hand and let your eyes follow the movement of the object. This will help you be familiar and comfortable with moving objects in repeated circular motion. Also, this will help prevent any uneasiness when you quickly shift your vision from one side to another.

Try this exercise as a variation to the first one and if you don’t have any small object to toss around. Look up for a few seconds and then down. Repeat. Start slowly and then pick up some speed. After you have reached a fast and steady pace, do the exercise again — this time looking from left to right.

Sit comfortably on a chair and then stand up straight. Repeat this several times until you get hang of the feeling. As soon as you get used to this repeated movement, challenge yourself and do this exercise while keeping your eyes closed. Hold on to the arm rest if you need support until you don’t need to any longer.

On a clear 10-foot path, walk back and forth frst with your eyes open and then eyes closed. Do this beside a wall or a sofa so that you can hold onto it for support.

Baths and showers always provide a luxurious, soothing and energizing feeling. It can bring you warmth in winter and coolness in summer. It can ease your senses after a long tiring day or jumpstart your body for another day ahead. When properly planned, baths and showers can gie you just what you need. Here are some tips in making the most out of your bath or shower.

Opt for morning showers and evening baths. Showers usually more invigorating than baths. This can be attributed to the temperature consistency. Part of your body is exposed to air while the other part is touched by cool or warm water. Baths, on the other hand, are more calming. Being partly submersed in water will make your limbs slightly buoyant causing a drop in muscle tension. Also, the reclining posture will make you more relaxed and rested.

Check the temperature of the water before your bath. When the heater is turned on, water can reach a scorching temperature of 62.8 degrees Celsius. Use your elbows to test the tap water. Elbows are more sensitive to heat as compared to your hands and feet.

Your bath can help you in your regular exfoliation routine. Before you reach for your loofah or pumice stone, stay in the bath or shower for a few more minutes. This extra minutes can soften the dead skin on your feet, elbows and other parts of your body. Once you rub the softened dead skin off, rinse well and apply body lotion.

Coupling massage therapy with bath can help people suffering from arthrities, muscle injuries, skin maladies and poor circulation. People with heart conditions should be cautious on the water temperature of their bath. Very hot baths can make the blood vessels near the skin’s surface to expand because of the heat which in turn lowers blood pressure.

Preventing allergies from happening to you and you family can be a very overwhelming. Having an idea on which allergens frequently attack your family can lighten up the load. Reducing exposure to other common allergens can also help. Although you cannot contain the risk of allergies everywhere you go, you can always start at home. If you or your family is prone to allergy attacks, try out our tips in keeping your home allergy free.

Use plastic casing for all mattresses and pillows before placing bedsheets and pilow cases to reduce the risk of allergy attacks brought by dust mites. Also, all beddings should be washed in hot water every week. As much as possible, do not hang them outside to dry as they can accumulate pollen ehich can also trigger allergy attacks. Draperies and curtains should also be washed regularly as well.

Remove carpeted floors at home as these can easily trap allergens like dust. Opt for tiles or polished floors instead. Be careful in purchasing additional fixtures for your home. Carved wood furnitures, lamp shades and books can also trap allergens inside your home.

Keep the humidity level at 45%. Durinng summer, use air-conditioning to counteract the overly humid air and use the humidifier to moisten and warm the air during winter.

Mold and mildew can also cause allergy attacks. Use strong cleansers like ammonia and chlorine to get rid of them. Ventilate the whole room by opening windows and fans to make the home unsuitable for growth of mold and mildew. Make sure that you use a mask while cleanun and all family members especialy those with asthma will not stay at home for a few hours after as the smell can aggravate allergies. Use strong cleaners only when needed and avoid relying on them during regular cleaning. Instead, use milder products like baking soda, vinegar and other mild soaps for your regular house cleaning needs.
