Kitchen fires are the leading causes of home fires. Fortunately, it is also one of the most preventable fires. By adhering to kitchen safety guildelines and reminders, you can keep your family safe from kitchen fires. Here are some tips on prevening kitchen fires.

Always have your eye on the food that is cooking. Never leave them unattended. You can immediately prevent a big fire from happenning if you are attentive to any possible changes while cooking food. This is also true even if you use the microwave oven for cooking. Sparks and fire can occur if the wrong materials were accidentally used or the amount of cooking time is incorrect.

Wear appropriate clothing while cooking. Avoid wearing flowing or loose long sleeves as these can easily catch a fire. Hair should also be tied back to a bun or a ponytail.

Make sure that all pots, pans, broilers, ovens and vents are grease-free. Remember that grease build-up can ignite and cause fires.

Keep the stoves free from anything that can catch fire. Avoid placing spice racks, pot holders, kitchen towels, curtains and cookbooks above the stove. As a general rule, flammable objects should be at least 3 feet away from the stove top.

Children and pets should stay away from the stove at all times. If they want to help around the kitchen, give them tasks that does not involve them hovering over the stove top. Let them mix the ingredients or arrange the food presentation when the food is cooked already. Also, advice them to be in their best behavior when they are in the kitchen. Rowdy behavior can cause objects to topple over and possible cause a fire.

Always remember to unplug kitchen appliances when not in use. If possible, have a fire extinguisher for your kitchen in case a small fire happens.

Here are some tips on how to efficiently shop and store food:

Plan your meals. A menu is a good starting point not only for your
food shopping, but also for your cooking. Simply plan the meals you
wish to have (including some snacks, etc.) and break them down into
ingredients which you can consolidate for your grocery list.

Choose a supermarket that you are familiar with. This will ensure that
you spend less time in the grocery as you are already familiar with
the layout. Not only will this save you time, but it will also save
you money by not being tempted to buy anything not in your list. Stick
to the list.

While packing the groceries, pack them according to storage groups.
All items to be stored in the pantry will have to go together, and
same with freezer items, or crisper items, etc. When you get home,
make sure you unpack and place them in their rightful places
immediately.

Here are tips on how to easily peel a hardboiled egg:

One easy thing to do to peel a hardboiled egg is to immediately take
the egg out of the hot water after boiling and then place in ice cold
water. This will help contract the egg inside and stick away from the
shell. Peel the eggs in cold running water. You can also try
refrigerating the egs first before using. When they’re cold, they’re
easy to peel.

You can also try adding vinegar or salt to the boiling water. The
acidity of the vinegar helps soften the shell. Another tip is to roll
the eggs underneath your palm over a flat surface so that the membrane
will loosen.

Here are a few tips on how to save time in the kitchen:

Instead of thinking what to cook every meal, it’s better to make
weekly menu plans. This way, you can definitely be able to do your
grocery shopping for one week. You also won’t have to mull over what
meal to cook when you get home in the evening.

It’s also good to have a well-stocked pantry. This way, you won’t need
to make emergency runs to the store for ingredients. This is more true
if you do the item above.

To save time, you can also cook food in large quantities. Divide in
individual portions and freeze in freeze-friendly containers. This
means you would only have to reheat food when you need them.

Use leftovers. Dice meat and vegetables for a meatloaf or casserole.
You can also add meat and other veggies to make yummy sauce.

Making chocolate covered strawberries is simple enough. Just follow
these instructions:

Choose your strawberries carefully. For chocolate dipping, ripe
strawberries with the stems intact are the best. White or green
colored strawberries is an indication of unripeness while too dark a
red can mean they are overripe. Check for brown spots or molds. The
stems should not be dried. Place strawberries in the fridge, and use
as soon as possible.

Choose your favorite chocolate. It can be dark, milk, or white, or a
combination of the three. You can try melting chopped commercial
chocolate or you can buy those especially made for dipping.

Wash the strawberries with cold water, getting rid of sand or dirt.
Place them on a clean towel or papertowel so they can dry completely.
Leave them to dry while you are preparing the chocolate.

Mel chocolate with a bit of butter, shortening, and vegetable oil over
a double boiler and stir well. The butter will help give the chocolate
a shiny and smooth texture, especially if you do not know how to
temper chocolate.

Place your strawberries on your far left, the bowl of melted chocolate
in the middle, and a tray lined with parchment paper on your right
(reverse the order if you are left handed). Hold the strawberry stem
and dip the strawberry into the chocolate until only 1/4 of it is
uncovered by the chocolate. Raise up and allow excess chocolate to
drip back into the bowl. Place your strawberry into the tray with
parchment paper. Let the chocolate-covered strawberries dry completely
before serving.

Do you have a lot of silver pieces that need to be cleaned? Here are
some easy steps on keeping your silver clean and shiny:

For one or two pieces, you can get a tube of non-gel toothpaste and
squirt a bit on a dry clean cloth. Rub the toothpaste unto the silver
until the tarnish has disappeared. Rinse the pieces well with warm
water and dry with another clean dry cloth.

For several pieces, a bit of baking soda will do the job. Sprinkle a
bit of baking soda on a damp washcloth and rub it over the silver,
working on the tarnished parts specially. Once this is done, rinse
with warm water and dry with a soft cloth.

For multiple pieces, you can line all your silver pieces in a
heatproof sink or a deep heatproof dish. Sprinkle evenly about 2
tablespoons of baking soda across all of the silverware. Pour boiling
water into the container, making sure that the pieces are completely
submerged in the water. Let sit for about 15 minutes. Scrub the more
stubborn tarnish with an old toothbrush. Rinse with warm water and dry
on a soft cloth.

Having pest problems in your kitchen, especially your pantry? Here is
what you need to do:

Clean your pantry regularly, once a month at the least. Make sure you
throw away the stuff that are expired or empty. Wipe the shelves
clean, the wall, and also the floor.

Make sure that all the food are sealed. Better yet, place the contents
of opened boxes and packages into their respective airtight
containers. This way, pests won’t get into them. This will also prolong
the freshness of your foodstuff.

Consult a pest professional before putting insect or pest repellant.
Make sure that they won’t contaminate the food stuff which might loead
to poisoning.

Food is one classic gift when going to a funeral. The right food can comfort people. If you plan to bring a dish to a funeral, here are some tips you might want to follow:

Many people appreciate a hot soup, especially when they are down. Try chowders and other rich soups which you can freeze and reheat.

Another traditional gift is lasagna and other pasta dishes. Casseroles too are good comfort foods.

Find out other classic comfort foods such as cakes and puddings, rice dishes, and other not-so-tradtional dishes such as jambalaya.

Many people would probably bring food too. So make sure you bring something that can be frozen and reheated. Do not expect that the bereaved family would eat the dishes right away. So include a small card that has reheating instructions.

First of all, find out your budget. This will help you limit the items that you wish to buy. To help do this, you may also want to do some research on the different crockery available in the market and it would also help the know the different brands and price ranges.

Try to buy crockery that is made out of quality materials. These can be more pricey than the usual fare, but these can last longer than the cheap versions. In the long run, it will actually help you save money, by not buying crockery every so often.
